Happy food: chocolate!

There are a lot of foods that make us happy. Actually food in general makes us really happy. But some foods are even happier than others, we call them ‘happy food’. And because we love to share our happiness with you, we will tell you a little bit about what they are, where they come from and why they make us happy. First up: chocolate!

Why does chocolate make us happy?

Well obviously because it tastes like heaven, right? But there is more! As you may or may not have heard yet, chocolate contains the happiness hormone. We will explain how this works.

There are over 300 chemicals that occur naturally in chocolate. Some of them can affect the brain via the release of particular neurotransmitters. Neuro-what? Neurotransmitters are exactly what they sound like. They send signals back and forth between neurons. They can influence a lot, for example the way you feel and your emotions.

It turns out this is what makes us feel so happy. The consumption of chocolate releases several neurotransmitters that have positive effects on our feelings. This is what makes humans feel happy. One of these positive effects is phenylethlyamine, which causes alertness and a degree of excitement, quickens the pulse rate, and makes you happy. Phenylethylamine is sometimes called “the love drug”, because it arouses feelings similar to those that occur when one is in love. Another neurotransmitter is serotonin. This is a mood-lifter as well. One chemical that causes the release of serotonin into the brain is tryptophan, found in (you’ll never guess) chocolate!

What else can cause this happiness?

Chocolate is not the only thing that can cause this happiness. For example fruit, kissing, exercise and certain drugs (which of course we would never recommend) can trigger the same feeling.
